If you’re a freelancer, blogger, remote worker, entrepreneur or business owner, you’re probably in the same boat as me: you need to work throughout the summer. Summer for me is the most tempting of all seasons to let work slip. And although it’s a little slow during this season, I still need to get a lot of work done. And I know I’m not the only! That’s why I’m sharing my 5 smart work productivity tips to stay productive this summer.

To beat the summer heat making you exhausted — or am I the only one experiencing this? — and get sh*t done. Let’s go!

#1 // START EARLY & MAKE A SCHEDULE

Honestly, if one of my friends would read this list and see this tip as number one they would probably burst out laughing. Fiona and getting up early? But I am trying to get up early and get an earlier start. It’s just with a lot of up and downs at the moment.

If you’re like me, the only tip I can give you is to just get up and have something waiting for you that you’re looking forward to. A breakfast that makes your mouth water, a book you’ve been dying to read or a good work out session. Find what will get you out of bed.

After you get up early, get a notebook or your agenda and write down your to-do list for the day. Start with your three big, important tasks followed with smaller tasks you need to get done.

What I do for my monthly planning is I first make a list of the important tasks and projects. I use Asana to work these out and add smaller tasks to them. Then I plan out the month on paper and define when I should do what and when I have a meeting or something else to do. Now that I know the dates I enter them into Asana.

I use my Dear Diary to plan out my days. The Dear Diary agenda* has daily pages with three main tasks, a to-do list and 10 minute tasks list. I look at Asana what I planned and write the tasks down in order of importance and time. This way I know what I should tackle first and how long something is going to take me.

I know it seems like a lot but it keeps me organized and productive all summer.

#2 //  FIND A COOL SPOT TO SET UP YOUR WORKPLACE

One of the best work productivity tips I can give you to stay productive this summer is to set up shop somewhere that’s cool and doesn’t warm up. I know that during the mornings and early afternoon I can sit at my own desk. After that I’m better off taking a break and later in the afternoon I can work outside in the shade on our roof terrace. Otherwise, I’ll transform in an overheated mess and need a nap before the afternoon.

Another option is getting an air conditioner but that’s not great for your health. Having a place that stays cool or knowing when and where you can work without getting overheated is the goal. Make sure that wherever you end up working this summer, that it’s organized, you have no distractions and water within grabbing distance. You want to get work done and not let it pile up for when your new projects arrive.

#3 // GET DRESSED

It’s the one of the work productivity tips you probably see every where but getting dressed as if you’re going to an actual office helps with feeling productive. It’s easy to fall into the sweats or PJs all day trap so lay out what you’re going to wear the night before. Especially when you work from home in the summer it can be that extra push to get you going.

The goal is to wear something comfortable but presentable. Invest in flowy, comfortable clothes. Dresses, sophisticated palazzo trousers or a short & blazer combo — like the one I’m wearing in this post — are stylish, comfortable AND summer proof. And when your friend calls you for a quick lunch, you’ll make a stunning impression of being the productive freelancer that you are.

But getting dressed up isn’t just about putting on regular clothes instead of sweats. It’s also about taking care of yourself. Clean your face, put on some lightweight make-up and spritz yourself with your favorite {summer} scent. Do whatever to make you feel comfortable and like you’re going to work.

#4 // GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK

It’s summer! You’re supposed to be outside and enjoy life. Obviously you can’t go off the rails and not finish work but you also should take a break to stay focused. The best way is to set a timeframe — from 30 minutes to 2 hours — to focus on your work and then take a break with a set time. Eat lunch outside, go for a walk or talk to a friend. Whatever you do, do something to get back to work refresh.

Something else that will make your workweek a lot better when you work from home is to plan fun activities to look forward to. Plan a coffee date with a fellow girlboss, go out to drink cocktails with friends or pick out a movie on Netflix and just chill.

#5 // CHECK-IN WITH YOURSELF

I try to use my five minute journal every day to check in with myself. Whenever I feel down I get the most out of my gratitude journal. I check-in in the morning and set intentions and then I check in at night — before I go to sleep — to end the day. So why not do it for work?

Working in the summer is not the best situation you could be in but it is what it is. Don’t let yourself get sucked into the FOMO of summer. Set an intention at the beginning of the day — an affirmation — and end your day by looking at what you’ve accomplished, what went great and what you like to change up from now on.

In the agenda that I use — the Dear Diary agenda — there is already space dedicated to writing these things down. You can leave some space free on top and under your to-do list to write these things down. Your affirmation before you even start before your to-do and a small sentence about your day after you’re done with work.
