3 INSTAGRAM PLANNING TOOLS

by TheChicItalian

When it comes to running a blog it doesn’t just stop at creating the content & publishing it. A big part of blogging is promoting your work & getting it out there through social media. Not only do you have to shoot or adapt content for social media, you also need a plan when to schedule to get the most out of it plus which social media channels to use. And that’s where planning tools come in!

For a style blogger like myself the number one social media channel at the moment is Instagram. It’s the channel I always keep up with, drives most traffic & the best way to build relationships with likeminded individuals. I use a social media planner to plan what I’m going to post plus a separate app to schedule all my posts in advance. This way I have a consistent feed & content flow. But before I found my perfect Instagram planning tool I tried out some other options. In this post I want to share my knowledge I’ve collected along the way because it’s relevant for anyone with a blog or business that is active on Instagram.

Here are 3 Instagram planning tools I’ve used, what I’d like about them & what I didn’t like:

// HOOTSUITE

Hootsuite was the first tool I tried out to start scheduling my Instagram posts because I was already using it for Twitter & Facebook. Even though it works really well for the other two social media channels it wasn’t the best scheduling tool for Instagram. What mostly bothered me about Hootsuite is that you can’t see how the images would look in your feed. It’s pretty important if you want to grow your Instagram account to make it look cohesive. Another thing that bothers me, not only for planning my Instagram posts but also for Twitter & Facebook, is that the app doesn’t let you edit a Tweet or caption. I always had to switch to my laptop if I spotted a small error later on.

Pros & cons

You can use it for multiple social media channels
➕ You can create a personalized overview of the things you want to see {your feed, what you liked, etc.}
➕ It’s the most straightforward Instagram tool

The design is not the best out there
➖ You can’t edit your post in the app
You can see what you planned but you can’t see how it would look in your feed

Because Hootsuite wasn’t doing it for me, I decided to look further for an app that would fit my needs. The first app I came into contact with was the Planoly app. What I first loved was the fact I could finally see my feed & how my feed would look with new images added. You have three different ways to see your feed:

  • Unscheduled: Here you can see all the grams you haven’t posted or scheduled yet. You can still move around all your Instagram posts to organize them.
  • Scheduled: These are the grams you’ve already posted or have scheduled to go live.
  • All: speaks for itself, but to clarify: here you can see everything you uploaded into the app.

Another function I love is that you can schedule multiple snaps so you don’t have to go back into the app to schedule your grams manually. The downside of the app? When I first started using it I got a 30-day trial to try out the app & after that time period you needed to buy a plan which started with 8 euros a month {right now there is also a free option}. To me that’s a pretty big commitment for a feed that doesn’t generate any income.

Pros & cons

The feed set-up with scheduled, unscheduled & all overview is super handy
You can schedule multiple photos
They have great free resources on their website & provide valuable information through their newsletter

The app has a free plan right now but it’s pretty limited for my needs {you can upload 30 grams per month}
There are a lot of functions I personally don’t use like analyze {Instagram has their own service for it} or comments

Another app I tried out to plan my Instagram feed with is the Mosaico app. This app is not free but doesn’t cost a lot. A plus is that you get to upload an unlimited amount of Instagram posts. Just like with the Planoly app I had a clear overview of my feed & how it looks when I add new content to it. In the Mosaico app you can also move unpublished grams around to create the perfect look for your feed. When you tap on the gram you can write your caption & add a hashtag cloud that you can preset.

Another plus is that you can insert your post times for the morning, afternoon, evening & night to make scheduling easier & more consistent. Downside is that you can only plan one Instagram post at a time. After you post that gram you have to manually plan in the next one you want to post.

Pros & cons

You can create hashtag clouds you use frequently
You can insert your post times for the morning, afternoon, evening & night to make scheduling easier & more consistent
Clear overview of how your feed is going to look

I would have loved an overview that the Planoly app has with scheduled, unscheduled & all
You have to manually set up a schedule & you can only schedule one Instagram post at a time
When you try to @ someone you have to check Instagram if you’re tagging the right username because they don’t give you suggestions like you would get in Instagram, Hootsuite or Planoly

// THE VERDICT

Which one I use to plan my Instagram posts? Mosaico! However, it’s a close call with Planoly. The perfect app would be a hybrid between the two but right now Mosaico wins because I can throw an unlimited amount of photos into the feed. I also love the hashtag clouds which makes it easier to add all the right hashtags plus I can categorize them by subject like outfit, motivation Monday or food. Overtime I post a gram with a certain theme I can reuse a hashtag cloud.

Do you use an Instagram planning tool?
