October 29, 2018

Goodbye October. Hello highlights and favorites! Can you believe that we’re almost counting down to the new year? Okay okay, we still have two months to make 2018 a success. I don’t want to cause a panic! But the year flew by so fast for me.

But before we officially say farewell to this month and kick off a new one, I want to share my highlights & favorites of October. I did some cool and new things, I watched one of the best series of 2018 — Check. It. Out. Now! — and I curated new things to add to my beauty and style collection.

NETFLIX ORIGINAL
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

If you haven’t checked this series out on Netflix than stop reading and go go go! This Netflix original is a remake of the movie and a book adaption. I haven’t read the book and I’ve only seen the movie a lifetime ago. But this series is just so good!

The series focuses on a family who lived in a haunted house years ago and how that affected them as a family. Yes, it has its scary moments but I would say it’s more a thriller than it is a horror movie. In case you’re still not sure, watch the trailer here.

I don’t want to give too much away but expect beautiful shots and the story unfolds in way you might not have expected. And after you’ve watched it, check out this article to check what you’ve missed.

LUNCH HOTSPOT
FRENCHIE CAFÉ IN UTRECHT

I’ve had Frenchie café in Utrecht on my list of places to visit since it opened this year. When my niece asked if I wanted to go I right away said YES! It’s the cutest little café, a little bit outside of the city center you would normally visit but not that far away. The interior is very Instagramable — which is probably the intention — and you can see they thought about all the details. From the seating to the cutlery to how the food is presented.

My niece and I both went for the red velvet pancakes and I also went for coffee — no surprise here. I do have to say that the pancakes don’t particularly taste like red velvet but the quality of the food is really good. It is on the more expensive side but I do think it’s the perfect place to go to meet a friend or have a meeting. You have to see it as paying for the full experience of lunching there.

My recommendation would be the red velvet pancakes because they do taste great and I love the toppings. Something I didn’t get but looked hella cute was the unicorn cupcake. And don’t forget to shoot a cute photo for the gram!

THE HASHTAG WORKMODE
NEGOTIATING WORKSHOP

Another highlight of the month October was going to the workshop about negotiating by Hashtag Workmode in Rotterdam. One of my business friends Evelyne asked if I wanted to to the workshop and I figured that it would be a good idea to boost my negotiating skills. I’ve mentioned it before but people have a thing of not talking about finances or prices. Most women have a hard time asking what they are worth for various reasons. We are more likely to empathize with others when they say things like ‘our business is not doing so well, so we don’t have a big budget’. But we also give ourself less credit for what we can do.

During the workshop they talked about these issues, how we can ask for more and work on slimming down the pay gap. But also about the different ways of negotiating, what to do when you’re negotiating and how a no is not the end but the beginning of the negotiating process. All things I needed to know about because I am that woman who thinks they ask too much when I now I bring the value and when I get a ‘no’ I would back off.

It ended with an interesting workshop and panel of inspiring women answering questions. Which I loved because I personally love a more interactive workshop instead of just listening. If you’re Dutch and doubted to ever go to one of their workshops, go next time! It’s interesting, interactive and I actually walked out with something new I learned. Here I am btw!

BEAUTY FAVORITES OF OCTOBER

I also have two beauty favorites this month: the Maybelline matte lipstick in 930 Nude Embrace & Essie Wicked*.

The Maybelline lipstick was a goodbye gift when I left my last job. It’s actually the perfect nude for my skintone. Nudes often look either very deadly on me or too pinky/organe-y. This color is actually more of a brown nude which I would not have suspected being a good fit. I’ve always dabbled in the more pinky nudes because I figured it would look the best with my pale skin and brown nudes fit better with a warmer skintone. I have to say that this has made me excited to try other colors.

The other one is one of my all time favorites that I’ve wanted to talk about: Essie nail polish in Wicked. I saw on Instagram that Wicked is the color of October but for me it’s my year round nail color. It’s a dark, wine red color that changes into a black cherry red when you apply more or thicker coats. If you want to have the perfect autumnal nail color, than check out Wicked from Essie.

THE CHIC LIST UPDATE

And with every month comes a new The Chic List. Next to my beauty favorites I added some new items on my wish list & what I’ve been loving this month. Check out the full list here.
