Wow, can you believe we’re already one month into 2019? Where does the time go! But even better, do you still remember the goals you’ve set for yourself? I’m still well on track but I can imagine that your good intentions are getting blurrier by the day.
But did you also set goals for your style? I’m still building on what I’ve been doing for years and just did a small clear out in January. Small because I actually haven’t bought much that I want to get rid of. However, one goal of mine is to look more put together every day. Yes, even on relaxed days. Mostly because I feel mor put together as a person when I do and partly because it’s part of my personal brand.
So today I want to talk about one style goal: how to make your outfit more chic in 2019. Below I’m sharing my personal tips on how to create a chic look day after day.
CREATE A PERSONAL STYLE
One of the things I’ve learned as a branding stylist is that being consistent with your looks will help create a certain perception. Same goes with a personal style — people will recognize it and create an image of you in their minds. If you want to look chic you should create an every day uniform and an event friendlier version.
In my case, my every day work uniform includes a structured blazer and my event look right now is a girlboss suit combined with a relaxed t-shirt. I’m absolutely in love with this green ZARA suit and this Anine Bing bolt tee*. This suit is actually in the new colors for my branding business, talk about good branding!

BUY CLASSIC WARDROBE STAPLES
If you look at most chic outfits they consist mostly of simple, classic wardrobe staples in neutral colors. It’s the ultimate how to make your outfit more chic hack to buy classic wardrobe items. To look chic you need to have items that fit your body type next to your personal style. When something is well fitted, it’ll look instantly more sophisticated. If you want to look more chic, invest in good basics.
You can get basics at any price point but there is definitely a difference in fabrics and how long you can wear it. That being said, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. I love this basic white tee by Anine Bing* because I love a low cut neckline but it’s also a silk mix. & Other Stories has a crewneck white tee* for just 19 euros and is made out of organic cotton. And Asos has a white tee* for even 9 euros. Basics for all budgets!
INVEST IN STRUCTURED ITEMS
Good fitted basics will make your outfits look more chic, structured items take it to next level. A loose t-shirt and skinny jeans with a structured blazer will look chic instantly. Same goes for structured bags, they give a more expensive look to your chic outfits. Both are items that I love to wear to create my chic looks.
Right now I’m obsessed with my Mango wool herringbone blazer*. I’ve been eying it because I just think it’s a great print if you want something different. Mango blazers are probably my favorite ones because they are well fitted. Another great buy is my & Other Stories camel wool blazer* that I’ve worn as part of my fall coats guide. Another well structured blazer in a neutral color for easy styling. If you have some cash to spend, check out this Saint Laurent gold striped blazer*. It’s a stand out piece that is beautifully made.
I’m obsessed with the Saint Laurent Sac du Jour* at the moment because it’s the ultimate girlboss bag. However, if I quickly want to add something new to my outfits I love to go to Mango for a structured bag. This croc effect bag* is a great example of a cheaper alternative. Or check out my Warehouse bag* I recently got. It kind of looks like the Chloé Faye bag but with snake print and only a fraction of the price.
ONLY WEAR ITEMS THAT ARE IN GOOD CONDITIONS
When I think of a chic women, I think of a women that’s put together. Her clothing look the part and are in the best condition. A dead giveaway of how to make your outfit more chic is to wear only items in good condition.
It’s important to keep your items in the best shape by knowing how to wash and keep up your items. You’re spending money to create your ultimate wardrobe so why not make it last as long as possible? In this post I’ve shared my tips to keep them in the best shape.
However, some items are not savable. Are there holes or stains in a clothing item? Or it has lost its fit? Throw it out! You need items in perfect shape. If it is looking old, it’s time to part ways.
PLAN YOUR OUTFITS
Another way to plan your outfits is to have a personal style uniform. For example, I love to wear a blazer with skinny jeans, graphic tee or blouse, boots and structured blazer. Or, on simpler days, skinny jeans, heeled boots and a wool sweater. It’s a simple formula that I can use day after day.
So my chic look could be an Anine Bing graphic tee* with & Other Stories grey jeans* with Anine Bing boots* and Mango herringbone blazer* (https://shopstyle.it/l/Y3O5). Or A silk Equipment shirt with stars*, Levi’s high waisted jeans* with Chloé Susanna boots* and Mango structured black wool blazer*.
