The first remote working review is in! Today I’ll be kick off The Coffee & Work Guide with a review of one of my favorite cafes to work from: Bagels & Beans. I don’t think it’ll come as a surprise that I’ve picked this place as the first place to combine your (freelance) work with coffee. When I work from somewhere else other than home, this is 90% of the time the place I’ll go to. And today I will tell you why!

// WORKSPACE — COMMUNAL WORKING TABLE

If you ever been to a Bagels & Beans you probably know their set-up but for the ambitious women reading this who isn’t familiar with them I’ll explain it a little bit. Most Bagels & Beans have normal tables and a couple of communal tables that are most likely at the window and one is randomly placed in the cafe. You can sit and work at any table, but since they provide communal working tables I suggest you sit there. Although sometimes I do sit at a normal table when the communal ones are full or when it isn’t busy.

Another great thing about Bagels & Beans is that they have electric outlets scattered around the whole cafe so you don’t have to worry about being in the middle of an email and your laptop battery dying. They also have pretty stable wifi — I’ve never had any problems with it — and you can get the password by asking someone who works there.

// COFFEE — THE BEST!

Hands down one of the reasons why I go to the Bagels & Beans Amersfoort is because they serve one of the better coffees you can get in Amersfoort. Dutch coffee is mostly on the weaker side but you won’t find that here. The lattes are great — best foam! — but I’ve switched to a flat white as my go to drink. In summer you can go for an iced coffee to cool down.

If you’re lactose intolerant or want to cut out dairy, they also serve other types of milk like soja, oatmilk or almondmilk. If you are not into coffee, they also serve different types of tea and juices. I highly recommend the Alles Gemengd which basically is all juices mixed.

// SURROUNDINGS — BUSY BUSY BUSY

The Bagels & Beans where I work from in Amersfoort is pretty big but packed with tables. If you’re going to work there on the weekends it might be too loud. With too loud I mean lots of people talking mixed with babies crying. If you don’t mind that, than you’re all good. But if you don’t, you might want to avoid this place. During the week it’s semi quiet — they’re busy almost every day — during the morning and after lunch hour.

// FOOD OPTIONS — MORE THAN BAGELS

We’ve all been there: working endlessly and forgotting the time. All of the sudden it’s lunchtime and your body is craving food. Luckily at Bagels & Beans they serve good food. In case the name didn’t tip you off, they mostly sell bagels. But Bagels & Beans Amersfoort also has salads, breakfast options, snacks and sweeter options.

I mostly go for:

  • The smoked chicken with a spelt bagel (they had a limited edition chicken bagel called the Kushee-Kip bagel which I still dream about)
  • The tosti with a spelt bagel is also a go to for me
  • If I want something sweeter I’ll go for the chocolate sprinkles bagel with natural cream cheese
  • When I’m feeling like I want to be healthier — which isn’t the case a lot of the times — I will go for the smoked chicken salad
  • For snacks I can highly recommend the vegetable ‘meat’ balls that I’ve discovered when I worked at the Bagels & Beans in Amsterdam with my old colleague

// BONUS POINTS — DIGITAL NOMAD APPROVED

I think the biggest bonus is that they, at least that’s what I think, carter to digital nomads. The electric outlets spread over the place, communal tables and providing good coffee just make this place one of my favorite cafes to work from.

// MY FINAL THOUGHTS

If it wasn’t already clear from the start, the Bagels & Beans Amersfoort gets a big thumbs up from me. The workplaces are spacious enough for your laptop, the coffee is great and the surroundings can get a little loud but still quiet enough to focus. Factor in that they also serve delicious bagels, you got a winner.
