Over the years I’ve become quite the light packing queen. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve actually took a checked bag with me and I’ve managed to get a week worth of clothes into the smallest carry-on suitcase. Which is such a contrast with when I was younger and took items with me ‘just in case I need them’ and never wore them.

And today I’m passing the torch on to you to become a light packing queen with the 5 ultimate light packing tips for your next destination. These tips will help you only pack the essentials that you’ll actually wear, have an organized {carry-on} suitcase and instead of being stressed about what to wear you’ll be relaxing and enjoying yourself.

#1 // CHECK THE WEATHER

Before you can even start packing, check the weather at your destination. Weather can change quickly so check a couple of days before you go away what the weather is going to be over the period when you’re there. You don’t want to be caught off guard when it starts to rain or when it cools down when you were expecting sunshine.

#2 // MAKE A PACKING LIST

To be organized and prepared for my trip I always make a packing list. You can do it on paper or on your phone, whatever works for you. I have one master packing list — I use a Moleskine printable from the My Moleskine website — that I always use, print out and add whatever I need extra for the trip. I also use my light packing lists that I’ve made for the blog as inspiration what I need to bring. Below you can find a couple of that I’ve made over the years.

#3 // PACK VERSATILE ITEMS & TRY ON THE LOOKS

I know I sound like a broken record but versatile items are where it’s at. And the same goes for when you’re packing for your next trip. It’s also the number one way to cut down on what you bring and pack light.

So check all the items that you’re bringing on your holiday if 1) you can use it in more than two outfits and 2) if you can wear it for multiple occasion. A blouse can turn into a light jacket and you can dress down a little black dress with sandals during the day and with booties for a late night dinner.

It’s also a good idea to try out the looks your bringing with you beforehand to prevent from bringing items that don’t match at all. Another plus is that you can instantly see what you might be missing. For me personally it’s also the bag, especially in the summer when you want to carry a water bottle and sunscreen. A little bag just won’t cut it and I always forget to pack a tote bag.

#4 // PACKING CUBES & PACKING THINGS SEPARATELY

A brilliant way to create more space in your luggage is to use packing cubes. For anyone who doesn’t know what packing cubes are, they’re little pouches in rectangle shapes in different sizes where you can put items in. I personally have a small, medium and large one and they’re all see-through at the top so I can see what’s inside in the cube. It’s not a must to have packing cubes but it does make your luggage more organized.

What’s more important is they way you pack items:

  • Always roll your items instead of folding them. Not only will your clothes crease less, it will save you space.
  • The only items I would suggest not to roll are jeans. It’s easier to lay the jeans out over the inside of your luggage. On both side there will be a piece of jeans sticking out that you can fold over when you’ve added the rest of your stuff.
  • Put the heavier items at the bottom.
  • If you have luggage where you can pack items at both sides, use one side for clothes and accessories and the other for your beauty bits and heavier items.
  • Use shoe bags for your shoes so that your other stuff doesn’t get dirty. You can also use these bags to put dirty clothes in or electronics.
  • Put a dryer sheet at the bottom of your luggage. This will soak up the smell and keeps everything fresh.

#5 // PACK SOME ESSENTIALS IN YOUR CARRY-ON LUGGAGE

If you’re going on a bigger trip and bringing carry-on luggage as well as a checked bag, keep some essentials — like a toothbrush, medication, lenses, underwear, etc. — in your carry-on. You never know what might end up happening to your checked bag. I also always put breakable stuff like perfume {under 100ml} and jewelry in my carry-on bag.
