When a trip to Italy was in the works the first thing that was on my mind was 1) calamaris 2) a trip to Venice and 3) a new packing list post.

Apparently the packing list posts are my best read ones on the blog. Which I can get totally behind because I love reading peoples posts on packing as well. So for this trip I made a new what to pack for Venice packing light list.

FULL DISCLOSURE: We did not stay in Venice but around it — we usually stay in Jesolo, which is called Venice beach nowadays. My family lives in the Veneto area — around Jesolo — so for us it’s the best place to stay. However, I do feel this packing list is a good indication of what to pack for Venice because the weather is pretty much the same. We went up to Venice for a day but I would love to someday stay in the city itself. There is a lot to discover, wandering around the tiny streets.

MY SHORT TRIP PACKING LIST FOR VENICE, ITALY

Whenever I pack for a trip I go through the packing tips I shared in this post. First thing I do is check the weather. It was going to be between 16-20 degrees all week, mostly sunny but also rainy. This means that I can go bare legged if I want to but nothing too summery.

I also went over what we had planned to do on the trip: a day to Verona, Venice, wine shopping and going to the family. We always go out to diner every evening so I knew I had to pack some extra items.

PACKING LIGHT TIP: To get the most out of your vacation wardrobe, you need to pack layers, color coordinate and items that work with each other. This way you can mix and match all your items together.

If you’re packing for your next trip, it’s good to take the time to plan out what you will be wearing on your holiday to see if everything fits together. And — maybe even more importantly — have enough to wear. Packing light is great but walking around in the same tee for days is not.

PACKING LIST REVIEW

So what to pack for Venice next time? I think the only thing I might switch for this packing list is an extra tee instead of a second cami top. In the end it rained more than it was sunny so an extra pair of jeans was not a luxury. However, in the end it turned out okay. The only item I did not wear during the trip is the shorts which I switched out for jeans in the packing list.

PACKING LIGHT TIP: Items you should avoid when you are going to Venice or staying in the city:

Flip flops: can be dangerous because of the streets plus your feet will get dirty. Opt for sandals. If you are staying seaside in Jesolo, you can wear flip flops at the beach. But in a city like Venice I would avoid them. Even just for your own safety.

If you are planning to visit churches: You will not get in if your knees and shoulders are not covered up. Wear something that’s midi length and shortsleeved.

Open bags: Even if you are aware of your surroundings, you can get easily pickpocketed in a crowd. And it is insanely crowded on some of the squares and little streets that lead to sightseeing landmarks. Opted for a crossbody bag with a zip or a zipped compartment to keep your valuables in.
